Compare Spreadsheet Values Side by Side
Use Excel Compare to review two versions of a workbook or CSV export without scanning every row manually. The result places the original and revised data side by side and marks detected additions, removals, and changed cell values.
The file picker accepts .xlsx, .xls, and .csv files. You can compare two files of the same type or compare an Excel workbook with a CSV export when their tables represent comparable data.
How to Compare Two Files
- Select the original spreadsheet on the left.
- Select the revised spreadsheet on the right.
- Choose whether formula text and sorting normalization should be considered.
- Start the comparison.
- Review each worksheet and verify important differences against the source files.
The tool does not edit either source file. It reads the selected data and creates a separate comparison view.
What the Result Shows
The grid uses separate states for added, removed, and modified cells or rows. A change list can help you move through detected differences, while worksheet tabs let you inspect multi-sheet workbooks.
A detected difference is a review aid, not an accounting or audit conclusion. Merged cells, duplicate rows, formatting differences, hidden data, formulas, and inconsistent exports can affect how two tables align. Always check consequential findings in the original workbooks.
Values, Formulas, and Formatting
By default, the comparison emphasizes cell values. If the formula option is enabled, formula text can also be compared and formula-related changes can be identified.
Visual formatting such as fonts, fills, borders, and print layout is not the main purpose of this tool. If you need a pixel-level or style-level workbook audit, use spreadsheet software designed for that task.
Handling Reordered Rows
Two exports can contain the same records in a different order. That can create a noisy result even when the underlying data is similar. For a cleaner review:
- Sort both files by the same stable key, such as an ID or email address.
- Keep column headers and column order consistent.
- Use the normalization option only when it matches the structure of the data.
- Remove unrelated totals, notes, and blank regions before comparing.
Duplicate keys require extra care because the tool cannot infer which duplicate record a business process intended to match.
Browser Processing and Sensitive Data
The spreadsheet comparison flow reads the selected files with browser APIs and performs the comparison in the current browser session. It does not send spreadsheet contents to TextCompareo's servers for comparison.
That architecture is not a blanket security or compliance guarantee. Browser extensions, enhanced spell check, clipboard synchronization, analytics loaded by the page, shared devices, and workplace policy are separate considerations. Use an approved offline workflow when your organization does not permit confidential data in browser tools.
Performance with Large Workbooks
Practical performance depends on file size, worksheet count, populated cells, formulas, the amount of change, available memory, browser, and device. A workbook with a small file size can still be expensive to compare if it contains many populated cells or widespread edits.
If a comparison is slow, export only the relevant sheet, trim unused rows and columns, or compare a filtered CSV. For very large or regulated datasets, a desktop or command-line workflow may be more appropriate.
Useful Review Scenarios
Spreadsheet comparison can help with inventory exports, CRM snapshots, price lists, project trackers, migration checks, and recurring reports. It is especially useful when both files have a consistent structure and a stable record key.
