Compare Two Directory Trees
Folder Compare helps you review two selected folders or ZIP archives as a set. It matches files by relative path and groups results as identical, modified, added, or missing. This can narrow a large directory review to the paths that need attention.
Typical uses include checking a backup, comparing a project before and after a change, reviewing a vendor delivery, or validating an exported asset set.
How Folder Matching Works
A filename alone is not enough because the same name can appear in several subfolders. The comparator uses the path relative to the selected folder. For example, src/utils/parse.js on the left is paired with src/utils/parse.js on the right.
Paths found only on the revised side are added; paths found only on the original side are missing. Files paired at the same path can then be checked for content changes.
How to Compare Folders or ZIPs
- Select the original folder or ZIP on the left.
- Select the revised folder or ZIP on the right.
- Start the comparison.
- Review the summary and filter the tree to changed paths.
- Open important source files in an appropriate file-level diff tool.
Folder comparison tells you which paths changed. A text, spreadsheet, Word, or PDF comparator can then help review the content of a supported file.
Why Files Can Differ Invisibly
Two text files may look identical and still differ byte for byte. Common causes include CRLF versus LF line endings, a byte-order mark, trailing spaces, a missing final newline, or different text encodings. Generated files can also embed timestamps or environment-specific paths.
Binary files require extra care: a changed byte confirms the files differ, but it does not explain the semantic change. Use a format-specific viewer for important binary documents.
Browser Processing and Sensitive Folders
The folder comparison flow reads selected files with browser APIs and performs the comparison in the current browser session. It does not send selected file contents to TextCompareo's servers for comparison.
That does not make every folder suitable for a browser tool. Analytics and normal page resources can still load, while browser extensions, managed devices, malware scanning, synchronized folders, and organizational policy remain separate considerations. Use an approved offline tool for restricted repositories or regulated data.
Practical Size Limits
There is no reliable file-count promise. A directory with many tiny files creates a different workload from a small number of large archives. Performance depends on total bytes, file types, compression, amount of change, browser memory, and device.
For a very large tree, exclude generated dependencies and build outputs, compare smaller subdirectories, or use a desktop tool such as a version-control client or dedicated folder differ. Verify migration and backup results with checksums when exact integrity matters.
