Compare the Wording in Two Word Documents
Word Compare extracts readable text from an original and revised Word file, then highlights detected additions, removals, and edits side by side. It is useful for reviewing contracts, policies, proposals, manuscripts, and other drafts when the main question is what the wording changed.
The dedicated page accepts .docx and .doc files. A modern .docx generally gives more predictable extraction because it stores document content in XML. The older binary .doc format can vary, so re-saving it as .docx may improve a poor result.
How to Run a Comparison
- Select the original document on the left.
- Select the revised document on the right.
- Start the comparison.
- Review detected changes and any enabled normalization options.
- Check important findings in the source documents.
The tool reads copies of the files and does not write changes back to the originals.
Text Changes vs Formatting Changes
This workflow focuses on extracted text. It can surface changed words, numbers, paragraphs, and other textual differences. It is not a full visual or formatting comparison: fonts, colors, margins, page layout, comments, and embedded objects may require Microsoft Word or another document-review tool.
That distinction matters. A document can look different while saying the same thing, or look nearly identical while a number or clause has changed. Choose the comparison method that matches the review question.
Tracked Changes and Document State
The comparator does not replace Word's revision history. A file with pending tracked changes can expose text differently depending on how it was saved. If you need to compare accepted final wording, make a copy and accept or reject revisions first. Keep the originals as the record of who made each edit.
Browser Processing and Sensitive Documents
The Word extraction and comparison flow handles selected documents in the current browser session and does not send document contents to TextCompareo's servers for comparison.
That is not a blanket confidentiality or compliance guarantee. Analytics and normal page resources can still load, and browser extensions, enhanced spell check, clipboard synchronization, shared devices, and organizational policy remain outside the comparator's control. Use approved desktop software when a browser workflow is not permitted.
Size and Extraction Limits
The main comparison flow accepts up to 300 MB of combined input. That limit is not a performance promise. Processing also depends on document structure, embedded content, amount of change, browser memory, and device. For a slow or noisy result, compare a smaller relevant section or use an approved desktop application.
Extraction can also omit or rearrange content stored in text boxes, headers, footers, tables, fields, or unsupported legacy structures. Verify consequential findings against both source files.
When to Use Another Tool
Use desktop Word when formatting, comments, authorship, or tracked-change history must be audited. Use PDF Compare for two text-based PDFs, Excel Compare for spreadsheets, or the main Text Compare page for supported mixed formats.
